For many travellers, Kerala is South India's most serenely beautiful state. A slender coastal strip is shaped by its layered landscape: almost 600 km of glorious Arabian Sea coast and beaches; a languid network of glistening backwaters; and the spice- and tea-covered hills of the Western Ghats.
Just setting foot on this swath of soul-quenching, palm-shaded green will slow your subcontinental stride to a blissed-out amble. Kerala is a world away from the frenzy of elsewhere, as if India had passed through the Looking Glass and become an altogether more laid-back place.
Day 1 - Munnar
If you decide to take a cab/bus from Kochi to Munnar, you will have chance to view the spectacular waterfalls such as Cheeyappara falls, Valera falls and Kalera falls. Once you reach your place of stay, you may take some rest, stretch your legs and take a shower. You could have your lunch at the hotel or in a nearby restaurant. Next, head to the beautiful tea plantations that form the landscape of the town, and smell the fragrance of the freshly picked tea leaves. Why not take some and make some tea at the hotel?! As it will be evening by the time you leave the plantation, you could go for the Kalari Kshethra show, which is a portrayal of a local form of martial arts. Having undergone a tiring journey and outdoor recreation, you might want to call it a day and return to your hotel for a wholesome dinner.
Day 2 - Munnar
The second day can begin with a heavy breakfast followed by a visit to the Eravikulam National Park to witness wildlife without disturbing their serenity. Next, you could visit the Mattupetty Dam, built in the mountains for hydroelectric power generation, and who knows, you might spot some wildlife there too! After this, the next place to visit can be Attukal Waterfalls where you will want to take your camera for mesmerizing pictures. In the evening, a visit to Blossom International Park will help you relax in the midst of natural beauty and a placid atmosphere. Have your dinner in the local markets where you will get a dozen of local items to buy!
Day 3 - Thekkady
In the morning, you can take a cab ride to Thekkady which is a small town located approximately 3 hours from Munnar by road. Again, as you would be tired after the journey, you could freshen yourself and have early lunch or breakfast at your resort. In Thekkady, the Green Park Ayurvedic and Spices Plantation is a must-visit to experience eco-friendly living. Later, you can visit the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary where you can take a boat ride in the Periyar Lake or a safari in the sanctuary.
Day 4 - Alleppey
Alleppey is a place where you do not have much to do but a lot to enjoy. You will have a houseboat booked when you reach which is similar to the famous houseboats of Kashmir. However, before you board your houseboat for a mind-blowing experience, you must visit the scenic Pathiramanal, an island in the middle of a lake, filled with a rich biodiversity. The rest of the day you can forget the chaotic urban life and relax in the midst of serene and calm waters.
Day 5 - Kovalam
After your peaceful stay in the houseboat at Alleppey, your next destination to explore will be Kovalam, a place known for its beaches. Kovalam has a wide array of beaches, but the most popular amongst tourists. While on the Kovalam beach, you can enjoy the clear waters, adventurous water sports and visit the Vizhinjam lighthouse that forms a very scenic view for great pictures. The local food in Kovalam is also one of its kind which you can relish.
Day 6 - Kovalam
Kovalam offers various great restaurants for the pleasure of foodies and a phenomenal number of beaches. During your next day in Kovalam, you can visit the other beaches like the lighthouse beach, Samudra beach and Hawa beach as they will be less crowded than Kovalam beach. This is your last day in Kerala so might want to explore the local markets for locally made merchandise to take as souvenirs and memories.
The cab will take you to the Trivandrum International Airport, the closest to Kovalam. Your trip in Kerala would have given you memories to cherish for generations!
