Skiing can be a means of transport, a recreational activity or a competitive winter sport in which the participant uses skis to glide on snow. The Indian Himalayas provide an excellent skiing experience owing to their great height which makes for long descents. The vast open spaces, snow clad mountains and the height of skiing slopes in India are enough to pump up the adrenaline in any ski enthusiast. The region provides immense opportunities for adventure sports like skiing and thrilling water sports which make Uttarakhand an ideal venue for adventure seekers. January to April first week is the best time for snow skiing.

One of the popular ski destinations in Uttarakhand in India, Auli resides at a height between 2500 and 3000 metres. Auli, in the Garhwal Himalayas, is a favourite skiing destination for many not just because of its beautiful glittering slopes but for the nice, clean environment as well. Located around 250 km away from Rishikesh in Uttarakhand, Auli is a must visit destination if skiing is your passion.  The region was once the base of paramilitary soldiers and when judged by foreign experts, it proved to be among the best ski destinations in the world

Auli is surrounded by vast acres of oak and coniferous forests. Skiing right through these snow-covered forests feels highly thrilling. One of the best things about this side of Uttarakhand is that the Government here maintains various provisions to make skiing possible for everyone-both for the novice and professionals. Owing to this, one can find a lot of skiing agencies as they will step out for skiing. Auli provides a 6 days Skiing programme.

The 6-day Skiing course is designed to let you experience the thrills of this sport in a safe environment. During the program, you will learn the basics of skiing and get to practice the skills you pick up on slopes of varying gradients. The 500m ski lift system, the longest cable car in Asia, connects Joshimath with Gorson, above Auli. A short distance beyond Gorson Lies the Hill of Gorson Top, which provides superb mountain scenes.

Snowfall in Auli

Known to be one of the highest man-made lakes in the world, the Auli Artificial Lake was built by the government to provide for snow when the snowfall by the season was scanty for skiing purposes. Apart from that, the lake obviously also has a scenic purpose. The mere presence of the lake in the region makes it all the more beautiful. Whether it is covered in snow in the winters or is surrounded by a green landscape in the summers, the lake is one of the best spots in the region.

And one of the best things to do in Auli is to spend time watching a sunset from the lake. The alpine meadows and majestic snow-capped mountains of Kuari Pass have been attracting trekkers and backpackers alike from around the world for decades. Although it’s only at an altitude of 12,000 ft it makes up for it with unparalleled stunning views. Apart from endless blankets of snow, you will come across thickets of grand green forests.

And you can trek from Auli to Gorson for an amazing offbeat experience of some of the most amazing experience of trekking and the sights of some of the highest peaks of the Himalayas, with an ever-looming presence of the Nanda Devi, throughout the trek.  And one such place is the Gorson Bugyal in the higher Himalayas of Uttarakhand. The word ‘Bugyal’ in Pahari means ‘meadow’, and that is exactly what Gorson is; a beautiful high altitude meadow of Alpine vegetation.
